WNBA All-Star Weighs-in on Recovering from an Achilles Injury

Both Kevin Durant and Breanna Stewart have missed significant time due to Achilles injuries. Durant went down with his during game five of the NBA Finals. With 9:46 left in the second quarter against the eventual champions the Toronto Raptors, Durant would collapse to the floor.  The former back to back Finals MVP would immediately grab towards his Achilles, he would try to limp off by himself, but would need assistance from former Warriors’ teammate Andre Iguodala and the team’s director, Rick Celebrini.

After the game Warriors, GM Bob Meyers shared with the world that Kevin Durant had suffered an Achilles injury.

It’s an Achilles injury. I don’t know the extent of it. He’ll have an MRI [Tuesday]. Prior to coming back, he went through four weeks with a medical team, and it was thorough, and it was experts and multiple MRIs and multiple doctors, and we felt good about the process.

He also stated during the postgame press conference Durant’s first injury was indeed a calf strain to deflect all questions that would arise referring to his original injury.

This is not a calf injury. I’m not a doctor, I don’t know how those are related or not. But it’s a different injury.

As for Breanna Stewart, she would also suffer an Achilles, while playing overseas in the EuroLeague Final Four Championship Game loss to UMMC Ekaterinburg. The injury occurred in the second quarter, the WNBA Regular Season MVP, the Finals MVP, and the EuroLeague MVP elevated to shoot a shot and came down on Brittney Griner‘s foot.

After Kevin Durant went down with his injury Dallas Maverick Owner Mark Cuban tweeted out that they need to invest in research tools to get in front of devastating injuries pertaining to tendons and ligaments. Tendons and ligament injuries have sidelined players such as Kevin Durant, Wesley Matthews, DeMarcus Cousins, JJ Barea, Kristaps Porziņģis and Breanna Stewart over the last four years.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1138553904025690112&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehypemagazine.com%2F2019%2F08%2Fwnba-all-star-weighs-in-on-recovering-from-an-achilles-injury%2F&theme=light&widgetsVersion=219d021%3A1598982042171&width=550pxhttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-1&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1138560603063087104&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehypemagazine.com%2F2019%2F08%2Fwnba-all-star-weighs-in-on-recovering-from-an-achilles-injury%2F&theme=light&widgetsVersion=219d021%3A1598982042171&width=550px

Someone that is familiar with an Achilles injury is Aces’ center Liz Cambage.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-2&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1053696866951593984&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehypemagazine.com%2F2019%2F08%2Fwnba-all-star-weighs-in-on-recovering-from-an-achilles-injury%2F&theme=light&widgetsVersion=219d021%3A1598982042171&width=550px

Last October Liz Cambage announced that she was suffering from tendinitis and bursitis in her left Achilles. The Dallas Wings confirmed she is heading home to Australia to rehab her Achilles, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Cambage recently spoke  with The Hype Magazine about the trials and tribulations, how she was able to keep herself in good spirits during the recovery period from her Achilles injury.

It’s not hard (to keep your spirits up), especially when your job is to be an athlete and to be working out all day and be running around. When you have that taken away from you, you learn a lot about yourself and your body, but sometimes it is a blessing in disguise that we need to take a break and look after ourselves better. Going through it was tough, but now I look back on it as a blessing.

Cambage is averaging 16.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this season for the Las Vegas Ace. The Dallas Wings trade Cambage to Vegas for  Moriah Jefferson, Isabelle Harrison, and their first and second picks in 2020.

Last week, Stewart released a video of her draining one-legged three from behind the arc just four months after rupturing her Achilles.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-3&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1163948940619743232&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehypemagazine.com%2F2019%2F08%2Fwnba-all-star-weighs-in-on-recovering-from-an-achilles-injury%2F&theme=light&widgetsVersion=219d021%3A1598982042171&width=550px
