Houston Rockets Guard Kevin Porter Jr. Arrested in New York City on Assault Charges

In a shocking turn of events, Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested in New York City on Monday, facing allegations of assaulting his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick. According to police sources cited by ABC News, Porter, 23, is currently in custody at the NYPD’s 17th Precinct in midtown Manhattan.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning when Porter returned to the Millennium Hotel in Times Square, where he and Gondrezick were staying. Reportedly, Gondrezick was upset with the late hour of his return, prompting her to lock the door. Police sources allege that, with the assistance of hotel security, Porter gained entry and proceeded to physically assault Gondrezick.

At this point, the extent of Gondrezick’s injuries remains unclear, but domestic assault charges are reportedly pending against Porter.

Kevin Porter Jr. had emerged as a rising star for the Houston Rockets, making significant strides in his career during the 2022-23 NBA season. He averaged 19.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game, marking a career-best performance. The news of his arrest has sent shockwaves through the basketball community and Rockets’ fan base.

On the other hand, Kysre Gondrezick, 26, had an impressive collegiate career, playing basketball for Michigan and West Virginia. She was selected as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever. Gondrezick played one season for the Fever before being waived and has not participated in the last two WNBA seasons. Currently a free agent, her basketball career has been marked by potential and promise.

This arrest is not the first legal issue Porter has faced in his career. In November 2020, he was previously arrested in Ohio on a weapons charge, although a grand jury declined to indict him. Despite this outcome, the Cleveland Cavaliers made him inactive for the first half of the 2020-21 season, leading to his trade to the Houston Rockets in January 2021.

The arrest of Kevin Porter Jr. serves as a stark reminder of the broader issue of domestic violence, which affects individuals from all walks of life. It also underscores the importance of taking such allegations seriously, regardless of the individual’s public profile or career success. As this case unfolds, it will undoubtedly garner significant attention, both within the sports world and among those advocating for the prevention and awareness of domestic violence.
